Tarsal coalitions occur when there is an abnormal connection between bones in the foot. Though these may be present at birth, they often do not cause symptoms until later in childhood and adolescence. Symptoms may include painful flatfoot and frequent ankle sprains. In many cases, rest, orthotic arch supports and/or a brief period of bracing or casting provides relief. For patients who continue to have pain despite these treatments, surgery may be required.
