Rickets is a metabolic bone disease that is caused by deficiencies of calcium, phosphorus and/or vitamin D. Without these vitamins, bones become weak and deform. Over time children may develop bowed or crooked legs. Rickets can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, or it can be the result of a genetic mutation (familial hypophosphatemia).
