Supracondylar Humerus Fractures

Supracondular humerus fractures are the most common elbow fractures in children. They are the result of a fall onto the outstretched hand. Children who suffer a supracondylar humerus fracture usually have pain and swelling of the elbow. Severe fractures cause obvious deformity of the arm. If the fractured bones have not moved, the child may be treated in a splint initially followed by a cast with close follow up. If the fracture has moved, surgery is necessary to realign the bones so that elbow range of motion and function will be normal.
